The connection to highlight

Jill Heitler Blomberg and Thomas D. Colin, the retired Connecticut Superior Court judge, were colleagues at the Greenwich family-law firm now branded Schoonmaker George. Their connection includes a specific publication project: Blomberg’s professional biography credits her as co-editor, 2000–2005, of Connecticut Family Law Citations: A Reference Guide to Connecticut Family Law Decisions, identifying Cynthia C. George and Thomas D. Colin as its authors.1 The same credit appears in her biography reproduced in the April 2018 IAFL conference materials.2 Colin’s current biography separately lists him as a co-editor, without dates; original editions were not examined, so edition-level roles and overlapping editorial periods remain unverified.3

The employment chronology indicates two periods of shared firm affiliation: 1999–2013 and, after Colin’s judicial retirement, April 2018 until his move to another firm in 2021. Those are reconstructed date bounds, not payroll-verified continuous employment dates. Colin’s judicial service separates the two periods.456789

1999; January 2006; October 2011 Blomberg’s 2018 speaker biography says she joined as an associate in 1999, became partner in January 2006 and named partner in October 2011.10 Her current biography lists partnership continuing to the present.11 Self-reported professional history; exact days are absent. Firm titles in retrospective biographies need not match the legal name in each historical year.
2001 The author note in the firm-hosted copy of Blomberg’s premarital-agreements article places her at Schoonmaker, George & Colin, P.C.12 The firm identifies the article as Summer 2001. The website’s 2023 upload path is not its original publication date.
2000–2005 Her biography credits the reference-work collaboration described above.1314 These are the dates attached to her credit, not a dated editorial tenure for Colin. The original editions, publisher contract and division of editorial tasks were not recovered.
January 24, 2013 Governor Dannel P. Malloy nominated Colin to the Superior Court; the official announcement identified him as a partner at Schoonmaker, George, Colin & Blomberg, P.C.15 Nomination is not itself confirmation or the start date of judicial service.
March 6, 2013 The Division of Criminal Justice reported General Assembly confirmation of the group of nominees that included Colin.16 Official confirmation account; this source does not establish his precise last day at the firm or first day hearing cases.
2013–2018 Colin’s current biography lists these years of Superior Court service. A November 2013 state-hosted training biography describes his firm partnership in the past tense.1718 Do not describe him as Blomberg’s practicing law-firm colleague during this interval. His judicial work included a presiding-family assignment; the evidence does not require that assignment to span every day of his tenure.
April 1–2, 2018 A contemporaneous contributed announcement says Colin retired April 1 and rejoined the firm as a named partner April 2, with his name restored to its title. It also says he would lead its alternative-dispute-resolution practice.19 These exact days come from a promotional/community-contributed announcement, not an official retirement order. His current firm biography independently agrees on a 2018 return to private practice.20
May 12, 2020 The Connecticut Bar Association listed Colin as a retired judge and panelist affiliated with Schoonmaker, George, Colin, Blomberg, Bryniczka & Welsh, P.C.21 A dated organizer record anchors the second period. Blomberg appears on the registration list, not the panel list; registration does not prove attendance or a joint presentation.
July 1, 2021 An indexed first-party firm announcement shared by Ross Kaufman states that Colin joined the firm subsequently named Siegel, Colin & Kaufman effective July 1.22 The original LinkedIn page could not be opened; the effective date is supported by indexed announcement text. It is not proof of an exact June 30 termination date at his preceding firm.
Current biography, checked September 2026 Colin is presented by Siegel, Colin & Kaufman as one of its founders and the leader of its mediation and arbitration practice.23 Describe him as a retired judge now in private practice at SCK—not as a current SGB partner or an active Superior Court judge.

What this does—and does not—show

The records support shared employment and an identified professional publication credit. They do not establish a personal friendship, continuing financial relationship between the two attorneys, work together on any particular client matter, or any influence on judicial decisions. The publication credit is first-party biographical evidence, not an examination of the original reference work. These distinctions should remain attached to any graph edge or shortened spotlight.

The 2018 announcement describes Colin as a 1996 co-founder; an independent April 2018 newspaper account gives inconsistent founding-age descriptions. An exact firm-founding date is unnecessary to the relationship finding and is not treated as independently resolved here.2425
